Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan Deepen Energy Cooperation with Ustyurt Agreement
On July 24, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan signed a significant Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) for hydrocarbon exploration in Uzbekistan's Ustyurt oil and gas region. The agreement was signed by Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy, the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), and Uzbekneftegaz.
Under the PSA, the parties will conduct 3D seismic surveys over at least 1,000 square kilometers and subsequently drill an exploratory well. If commercially viable hydrocarbon reserves are discovered, the project will advance to the development and production phases. Uzbekistan's Ministry of Energy hailed the agreement as a major milestone in energy cooperation between the two nations.
Rovshan Najaf, President of SOCAR, stated, "The signing of this agreement is evidence of our long-term strategy to develop the energy sector in Central Asia and the Caspian region." He expressed confidence that the collaboration would significantly contribute to Uzbekistan's energy security and infrastructure development.
On the same day, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev called President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to congratulate him on his birthday. The two leaders reaffirmed the importance of high-level visits in advancing their bilateral relations, which they described as brotherly, friendly, and allied. They expressed confidence in the continued successful development of their partnership across all spheres.
