Armenia
Armenia-NATO Working Groups Review PARP Document Progress
From June 3 to 5, a regular session of the working groups assessing the Planning and Review Process (PARP) document, which guides the Armenia-NATO partnership, was held at the administrative complex of the Armenian Ministry of Defence.
Participants reviewed progress toward achieving the Partnership Goals outlined in the PARP document and discussed next steps. Representatives from Armenia’s Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs, other relevant government bodies, and NATO structures involved in the Armenia-NATO Planning and Review Process participated in the session.
Levon Ayvazyan, Head of the Defence Policy and International Cooperation Department at the Armenian Ministry of Defence, and Piers Cazalet, Director of NATO’s Defence and Security Cooperation Directorate, praised the quality and consistency of the partnership in their concluding remarks, reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening Armenia-NATO cooperation.
Death of Soldier Due to Lightning Strike
On June 6, Narek Armani Margaryan, a soldier serving in military unit N of the Ministry of Defense, died from a lightning strike around 13:00 local time.
An investigation has been launched to fully clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Azerbaijan
Local and International Exercises
On June 2, a training session with reservists was conducted at the Combined Arms Army as part of joint activities with the State Service for Mobilization and Conscription. Reservists completed registration and medical examinations, received military uniforms and supplies, and attended briefings on military regulations, relevant legislation, and safety rules. The training followed a daily routine, including combined-arms and specialized classes, as well as firing exercises using small arms and grenade launchers.
On June 3, a live-fire tactical exercise was conducted with units of the Rocket and Artillery Troops. The exercise involved deploying units from their permanent locations to assembly areas, preparing vehicles for combat, and occupying firing positions. Combat firing was carried out using howitzers and multiple launch rocket systems, successfully destroying simulated enemy targets. The exercise aimed to enhance command staff decision-making, improve knowledge and skills for combat operations, foster interoperability among troop types, and strengthen personnel’s practical skills.
On June 4, representatives of the Azerbaijan Army participated in NATO’s multinational command-staff exercise “Resolute Force - 2025” at the G.S. Rakovski National Defense College in Bulgaria. Officers from the Military Administration Institute of the National Defense University, alongside participants from Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, North Macedonia, and Greece, successfully completed assigned tasks. The exercise focused on the military decision-making process and improving commanders’ and headquarters’ skills in managing units under operational conditions. Certificates were awarded to participants upon completion.
Bilateral Cooperation Status Reviewed During Serbia-Azerbaijan Military Talks
On June 3, military representatives from Serbia and Azerbaijan held a meeting in Baku.
At the International Military Cooperation Department of the Azerbaijan Defense Ministry, the parties reviewed the current status of bilateral cooperation, discussed future plans, and exchanged views on other matters of mutual interest.
NATO Mobile Training Team Conducts Operations Planning Training
On June 4, a Mobile Training Team from the Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum, Netherlands, conducted a training session on the “Operations Planning Process” at the War Games Center of Azerbaijan’s National Defense University.
The training included theoretical and practical sessions focused on operational planning and management within NATO, along with related subjects.
Polish English Teachers Visit Heydar Aliyev Military Institute
On June 5, a delegation of English language teachers from the Jaroslaw Dabrowski Military University of Technology in Poland visited the Heydar Aliyev Military Institute of Azerbaijan’s National Defense University.
The Polish delegation was briefed on the institute’s history and activities and received a detailed presentation on its distinguished record as an educational institution. Guests were also informed about the institute’s educational process, academic programs, and training system. Both sides discussed topics related to English language teaching, and the delegation’s questions were thoroughly addressed.
Georgia
Georgian Defense Forces Discuss Strengthening Cooperation with US National Guard
On June 4, Lieutenant General Giorgi Matiashvili, Commander of the Georgian Defense Forces, met with a delegation from the US National Guard led by Major General Richard Wilson, Commander of the Guard.
The parties discussed deepening defense cooperation between Georgia and the US. Lieutenant General Matiashvili thanked Major General Wilson for the practical support provided by the US. The discussion covered the “Partnership between Countries” program and the participation of Georgian and American soldiers in multinational training exercises.
The US Georgia National Guard delegation, in Tbilisi to mark the 30-year anniversary of cooperation with the Georgian Defense Forces, was also received by Brigadier General Roman Jokhadze, Chief of the National Guard. The meeting highlighted the strong relationship between the Georgian and US Georgia National Guards. The American delegation visited various National Guard subdivisions.
On the same day, a farewell and awards ceremony for Colonel Joseph Bilbo and Vice-Colonel Errol Munir was held in the “Army Hall” of the Ministry of Defense, attended by Deputy Minister of Defense Grigol Giorgadze, Lieutenant General Giorgi Matiashvili, and US Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunnigan.
Paata Patiashvili Attends 28th Ukrainian Defense Contact Group Meeting in Brussels
On June 5, Paata Patiashvili, First Deputy Minister of Defense of Georgia, participated in the 28th meeting of the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group in the Ramstein format at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
The meeting gathered heads of defense agencies and senior officials from NATO member and partner countries. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and UK Secretary of State for Defence John Healey opened the session. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte addressed the participants, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke via teleconference.
The members reviewed the ongoing war in Ukraine and discussed military aid and emergency support requirements for Ukraine.
NATO-Georgia Joint Training Center Hosts IEL MILU 2025
On June 7, the multinational logistics command and staff exercise IEL MILU 2025 concluded at the NATO-Georgia Joint Training and Evaluation Center (JTEC) in Krtsanisi, Georgia.
Military personnel from the Romanian, Croatian, Bulgarian, and Georgian Defense Forces participated and received certificates for their involvement. At the closing ceremony, the symbolic exercise flag was handed to the Croatian representative, signifying that Croatia will host IEL MILU in 2026.
