Zelenskyy and Aliyev Condemn Russian Airstrikes on Azerbaijani Facilities in Ukraine
On August 10, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held a phone conversation to discuss the peace agenda, bilateral relations, and recent attacks on Azerbaijani energy facilities in Ukraine. President Zelenskyy congratulated President Aliyev on the achievements in the peace process supported by US President Donald Trump.
Both presidents condemned Russia’s deliberate airstrikes on an oil storage facility owned by Azerbaijan’s SOCAR in Ukraine, as well as on other Azerbaijani facilities and a gas compressor station. They expressed confidence that these attacks would not impede their ongoing energy cooperation.
Media Reports
Following the call, Azerbaijani media outlets close to the presidential administration reported that Baku might consider lifting its embargo on arms supplies to Ukraine if Russian forces continue targeting energy facilities linked to Azerbaijan. The report detailed that Russian forces had struck a SOCAR oil depot in Ukraine’s Odessa region with five kamikaze drones, causing a fire and injuring four employees. This was noted as the second recent attack on facilities associated with SOCAR in Ukraine.
