Azerbaijan Protests 'France 2' Comment on Nagorno-Karabakh During Paris Olympics

On 26 July, during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games, a commentator on the French national public television channel "France 2" referred to Armenia as a friend of France and mentioned during the parade of Armenian athletes that "this year will be remembered by the Armenian people as the fall of Nagorno-Karabakh through the hands of the Azerbaijani army". France 2 also referred to Azerbaijan as a Caucasian country with territorial disputes.
In response, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Olympic Committee sent an official letter of protest to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In a joint statement issued on 28 July, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan said that the commentator's remarks violated the fundamental principles of the Olympic Charter. They said: "Such a disrespectful attitude of the state TV channel towards Azerbaijan is a clear violation of the Olympic Charter. This kind of propaganda goes against the spirit of the Games and disturbs the peace efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia".
The statement also called on the IOC to take a strong stance against the politicisation of sport during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. They called for a public statement of protest to be made to the French government, the French National Olympic and Sports Committee and France 2 television.
