Azerbaijani Natural Gas to Reach Syria via Türkiye Under New Swap Agreement

| News, Economy, Azerbaijan

On July 30, Turkish Minister of Energy Alparslan Bayraktar announced that deliveries of Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria via Türkiye will begin on August 2. A swap agreement was signed with Azerbaijan to facilitate the exports, which will be routed to Aleppo via the Turkish city of Kilis. Bayraktar noted that pipeline construction to the Syrian border was completed in record time, with infrastructure on the Syrian side also ready. The project is financed by Qatar, and the energy ministers of Qatar and Syria are expected to attend the launch ceremony.

The gas will primarily be used for electricity generation in Syria. The planned daily supply of 6 million cubic meters is expected to produce up to 1,200 MW of electricity. Combined with an additional 500 MW from Turkish sources, this is projected to increase Syria’s daily electricity availability from the current 3-4 hours to approximately 10 hours.
