Bayramov Highlights Turkey’s Support, Ilham Aliyev’s Washington Visit, and Strategic US Partnership

During a special Cabinet meeting dedicated to President Ilham Aliyev's visit to Washington on August 26, Jeyhun Bayramov, the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, emphasized Turkey's pivotal role in achieving a fair peace with Armenia, highlighted President Ilham Aliyev's successful Washington visit, and outlined strategic steps with the US and regional initiatives like the Zangezur Corridor.

Bayramov stated that President Ilham Aliyev's remarks in Washington "once again proved that Azerbaijan is interested in achieving a fair peace." He emphasized that Turkey's support was of particular importance, noting that "Turkey supported Azerbaijan's fair position at the international level; its coordinated and synchronized steps during the process made a positive contribution. Turkey's active position played an important role in ensuring stability. In turn, we also regularly inform the Turkish side about the measures taken and take joint steps towards sustainable peace."

The minister underlined that Azerbaijan had never accepted interim solutions that contradicted its national interests. He added that as the country's economic and political power grew, it became one of the most influential actors in the region. "Significant measures have been taken to expose Armenia's war crimes against Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan, remaining steadfast in its pursuit of justice, ultimately achieved victory," Bayramov emphasized.

He further noted that until the end of January of this year, Armenia had refused to agree on certain provisions of the draft peace treaty with Azerbaijan, particularly regarding the prevention of third-country force deployment on the shared border and the withdrawal of lawsuits. According to Bayramov, Armenia changed its stance only after the change of administration in the US.

Bayramov also pointed out that the repeal of Section 907 of the US Freedom Support Act signaled the start of a new phase of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States. He stressed that work would continue with the US Congress to strengthen bilateral relations. According to him, President Ilham Aliyev's visit to Washington gave momentum to elevating Azerbaijan-US relations to the level of a strategic partnership. The foreign minister stated that the agreements reached during the visit were a striking example of President Aliyev's diplomatic success. He noted that although relations had weakened under the previous US administration, "Ilham Aliyev's visit to Washington confirms that Azerbaijan-US relations are entering a new stage."

He added that both sides agreed to establish a strategic working group to implement the charter on strategic partnership signed by the two presidents, which covers energy, trade, regional understanding, security, the fight against terrorism, and other areas of cooperation. Bayramov emphasized that Azerbaijan expected constitutional changes in Armenia to remove territorial claims before signing a peace treaty. He underlined that the Joint Declaration signed in Washington stressed the importance of unimpeded access between mainland Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan region. "For this purpose, the Zangezur Corridor (Trump Route), to be developed through Armenian territory, will ensure Azerbaijan's internal connectivity and promote regional economic integration," he stated, adding that the project would also expand opportunities for regional trade and transportation.
