The European Parliament welcomed the normalization process of relations between Armenia and Turkey and called on Ankara to recognize the Armenian Genocide of 1915.
In its resolution, the European Parliament "commends the recent rapprochement between Turkey and Armenia in connection with the decision to start bilateral contacts, the appointment of special representatives, and the resumption of air traffic between the two countries."
The EP considers "this attempt to be a very positive development that has a positive impact on prosperity and security in the region." The European Parliament called on both parties to continue these efforts to normalize their relations fully and called on the EU to support this process actively.
According to the text of the resolution, the EP calls on Turkey "to pave the way for genuine reconciliation between the Turkish and Armenian peoples, including the settlement of the Armenian Genocide dispute, and to fully comply with its obligations to protect the Armenian and other cultural heritage."
